Welcome to the Department of Linguistics at the University of Michigan.

Language has a central role in human interactions and activities, and as a result the field of linguistics is situated at the intersection of the humanities and social and behavioral sciences. Throughout our 60-year history as a Program and Department, Linguistics at Michigan has maintained an approach to the study of language that capitalizes on this intersection. Faculty and students explore language structure, history, knowledge, behavior and use. Faculty research aims to integrate these diverse approaches to language in ways that engender new modes of linguistic inquiry and new research domains. Our graduate program focuses on linguistics as a cognitive and social science, providing strong theoretical grounding in these approaches to the discipline. Our undergraduate program contributes to a broad-based education in the liberal arts and sciences, and takes an analytical approach to language that can be applied to many fields.
